a note from THE AUTHOR

The C.S. Lewis quote above really hit home for me when it came to trying to articulate what ELEMENTARY is supposed to be about. We've all been there; you've had an idea swirling around in your head for a while and you feel like you really understand your own vision and where you think you might like to take it. Unfortunately, when it comes to putting words to it and explaining it to someone else who doesn't have a plug and play connection to your mind, ephemeral emotions and all, things get tricky.

 

Let's put it bluntly, shall we? The last few years have sucked pretty consistently. I have completely lost myself and even my first attempt at a fresh start, in a blur of work, stress, and more doctors than anyone should ever have to see in a lifetime. So now I'm taking control and trying to turn all the negatives into something positive by hitting the reset button and taking a year to focus on myself; my health, my wellbeing, my happiness.

 

There's no denying it's a risk to quit your job, plan to take a big chunk of time for yourself and just trust that things will work out, but at this point it really feels like I have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

I'm expecting the next year to be a lot like the rebuilding process after a natural disaster. Strip everything back to the basic components, ask some difficult questions and face some harsh realities and hopefully come out with something better than you had before everything went wrong. 

​

I know full well that I am incredibly fortunate to have the means to make this choice - I have heard stories from many others who weren't so lucky in similar circumstances - and so ELEMENTARY is part of how I want to hold myself accountable for making the most of this opportunity. I'm pretty sure there are going to be high points, low points, successes and epic failures and the idea is to share those with anyone who wants to listen. 

 

If nothing else, it will be an experience I never expected to have and in my book, that makes it well worth recording for myself but I also hope that it may give a light at the end of the tunnel for someone who is struggling.
